EATV Switches to Open Source Broadcast Technology

Archive Entertainment's streaming television network uses open source software to increase support for alternate viewing platforms and encourage free software innovation.

AUSTIN, TX - September 17, 2006 - Archive Entertainment has re-launched its streaming video feed using the open source software Icecast and Theora provided by the Xiph.Org Foundation. Previously, the network operated with proprietary closed source software that left many potential viewers unable to access the feed.

“I'm excited about the new EATV stream as it allows us to reach an even larger audience. We now support the three major computer platforms: Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, and Linux" commented Archive Entertainment owner Robby Zinchak. “The open source nature of Icecast and Theora should lead to enhanced security due to anyone being able to analyze their source code. We've had security problems in the past with closed source software.”

The open source Theora software allows for video to be compressed efficiently enough to be delivered in real-time across the internet. The open source Icecast software does the actual work of distributing the Theora-encoded video.

"As a strong supporter of Free software and Open codecs and a driving force behind the move to Ogg/Theora, I am very excited about the new EATV,” said Adam Harwell, acting director of EATV. “We have more support staff than ever before and a bunch of new content to usher in this new age of EATV."
